Burnout Is a Policy Choice—and so is Well-Being

Last week, the UN’s International Day of Happiness came and went. Some of us celebrated. Some of us barely noticed. And for many, it was business as usual—because happiness isn’t exactly on the priority list for most workplaces, institutions or governments.

But here’s the thing—it should be. And that's the entire point of the UN declaring this a thing back in 2012.

Happiness is a Leadership Imperative

The World Happiness Report has shown us, year after year, that the happiest countries are also the most economically stable, innovative and socially connected. The research is clear on this—when well-being is prioritized, success follows.

The same is true for businesses. According to Gallup, organizations that focus on employee well-being see:

21% higher profitability

17% more productivity

41% less absenteeism

And yet, so many leaders ignore the human side of work, clinging to outdated systems that prioritize efficiency over well-being, burnout over balance and short-term metrics over long-term sustainability.

The Disconnect Between Policy and What Actually Works

Despite overwhelming research, many of our policies and governing bodies prioritize the opposite of what fosters happiness and well-being. We see:

  • Cuts to mental health resources instead of investments in community care.

  • The rollback of workplace protections that ensure fair wages, work-life balance and psychological safety.

  • Leaders who frame well-being as "soft" or "optional" rather than the foundation of productivity, innovation and long-term success.

If we want happiness and well-being to be prioritized at the highest levels, we have to demand that it is.

What This Means for Us as Leaders

We don’t have to wait for policy changes to start leading differently—to make happiness a central part of how we design our workplaces, classrooms and communities. It starts with intentional action.

Creating environments where people feel valued and supported.

Pushing back on burnout culture and modeling balance.

Holding leaders accountable for prioritizing human well-being, not just short-term gains.

Creating the Change We Want to See

Happiness is a collective responsibility. If we want it to be a priority at the highest levels, we have to start prioritizing it in the spaces we lead every day.
